What is ARI?
At ARI, we guide high school students through hands-on research experiences that explore real-world issues—without falling into the trap of voluntourism.
Our focus is on learning, not saving. Students don’t enter communities to offer solutions; they enter to listen, observe, and understand. With guidance from mentors and collaboration with local NGOs—many of whom are long-term ARI partners—students explore complex topics like public health, education access, and environmental change.
We emphasize respectful, research-based engagement. Every student works alongside community stakeholders and partner organizations to ensure their projects are aligned with ongoing local efforts—not disruptive to them. Rather than rushing to create a project or product, students learn how to ask better questions, navigate ambiguity, and approach global challenges with humility and curiosity.
ARI isn’t about producing quick solutions—it’s about building the habits of inquiry and reflection that lead to deeper understanding. In doing so, students develop not only academic skills but also a greater sense of responsibility for how knowledge is applied in the real world. Our instructors have been sending students to Africa, Latin America, and Asia for the past ten years.
