In Africa, poachers often set hidden snares in bushes, tall grass, tree canopies, and around tree trunks. These traps are nearly invisible to roaming animals, who become ensnared as they pass by. Struggling to escape, the animals tighten the snares around themselves—often resulting in severe injuries, infections, and ultimately, death.
In Kenya alone, nearly 100 lions fall victim to snares every year. Zebras, antelopes, African buffaloes, giraffes, and many other species are also frequent casualties of this cruel and indiscriminate method of poaching.
